I’m convinced that with fatherhood, you should be awarded a degree in Theology to go along with it. I have learned so much about the nature of God, just in taking notice of Josiah. When he is crying it makes me instantly have empathy for him. Whatever caused his crying, whether it was something small or large, my first instinct is to comfort him. It’s because I love him with a fatherly love.
If you were in our High School class on Wednesday Night you’ll know where this article was inspired from. In the Nooma video called “Rain”, Rob Bell describes a hike that he and his one year old son were taking around a lake. Halfway around the lake it began to storm and his son, Vance began to whimper at first, and then belt out in a full scream of terror. Rob immediately held his son close to his chest and began to say “I love you, we’re going to make it, daddy knows the way home.”
Vance, his son,was terrified and all he could see was the storm. Rob’s viewpoint was quite different as this was a moment he would remember and cherish, because they were so close in that moment.
I don’t enjoy it when Josiah cries or screams, but I love it when he reaches out to me seeking comfort. It’s almost a bitter sweet experience.
“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.” -Psalms 34:17-20
Even though, we would prefer to never go through struggles and storms, God allows it to happen to us. Because it is in these times we seek God and are reminded of our dependence on him. It keeps us close to Him and he will protect us. Through this we grow spiritually stronger, even though we may seem weak to the world.
I love that we can call God, “Father”... even “Daddy”. He has adopted us as his children and loves us as his own. He has not abandoned us, but when we accept him and realize our need for Him... he comes running like the Father in the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11f). He just waits for us to reach out to Him.
Why is it we sometimes get angry with God, or seek all these other sources for temporary relief before we even run to God? God cares to comfort you in all your lifes storms whether they’re seemingly big or miniscule, trivial or tyranical. Seek Him first, delight in his presence, and cling to Him like a child to its Father.
