This Sunday, we will be discussing goals and developing a mission statement for our Youth Group. Something to get us thinking forward and striving toward what is ahead. If the church is Christ’s body, then we need to get moving, wouldn’t you agree? Although I don’t completely agree with everything in the Purpose Driven series of books by Rick Warren, and the youth one by Doug Fields... I will say there is good principle behind what they have to say though. There are five essential goals that a strong growing church must simultaneously accomplish. Praise to God, Service to one another and the community, Evangelism to our community and the world, Spiritual growth through study and self-discipline, and Fellowship for encouragement and support. It may be that these are only accomplished with the whole church. But even as the youth group, we are also responsible for fulfilling each of these goals to remain a healthy part of the body.
What we need to discuss is how we can reword this in ways that we all can understand and remember it easily to keep on the forefront of our minds and let it remind us of the things God expects us as a church to fulfill. I would still like us to collectively come up with a name that we can identify ourselves as the youth group. A long with the name an image or logo that we can design together that we can present to others. Kind of like how there is Teen Advisors, Young Life and their logos represent what they’re all about. In the past I’ve come up with things, but I realise that it only just becomes my creation, or idea. It really needs to be something that you can take ownership of and take pride in identifying yourself as part of our youth group. This will also drive how the youth website will be redesigned in the future and also how our youth room will look. I’ve been talking with the elders about reclaiming that back room as the youth room once the house is completed. I understand how important it is to feel like their is a place you can call your own. Be praying about all these things and especially as we decide on goals, a mission statement, a name, a logo. Also keep in mind this summer and the trips that are being planned. Don’t forget the Mission trip meeting tonight. Keep your eyes peeled for new events coming up.
