This week was filled with a plethora of thoughts I could’ve shared, but this one strikes a more personal chord with me than the others. Last Sunday Night, Fred Liggin IV spoke to us about God’s accomplishments in UGA’s campus ministry. The common thread that Fred spoke on was having the right person on the Throne of your life. His point was, that unless you allow God to rule in you... your life will never be complete and in most cases, results in tragic consequences.
As I look back at this past week, I think about how I’ve lived my life. Who really was on the throne? What guided my actions? What was my motivation when I did this rather than that? The question that I should ask myself daily and even throughout the day is, “Am I seeking first God’s kingdom or is it some other thing that tries to conquer my will?” I guess the same question could be simplified by asking the much said and much marketed, but rarely acted upon phrase, “What would Jesus do?”.
Little do we realize that when we pray to God for His Will to be done on Earth as it is in Heaven, we are actually giving God the permission to use us as his tools for enacting His will here on Earth...
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” -Ephesians 2:10
God is a toolmaker. He gives talents and spiritual gifts for a purpose for which He can spread His kingdom here on Earth. No tool is unnecessary, as some of you (even myself) have convinced ourselves of thinking sometimes. This is Satan discouraging us (read C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters sometime). If he can’t win our souls, he will render us comfortable Christians who are content in our spiritual walk to remain as we are, stuck on the verse “Some of self and some of thee”. Even I have wrestled with the thoughts of “This is enough. Maybe I’ll just try and maintain things, take the easy road and live an easy life.” But like Jeremiah says...
But if I say, “I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.
I challenge you (as I’m challeging myself) to allow God to be the reason for every action you take. Keep in mind the compassion Christ had for the hurting, the outcast, the weary and brokenhearted. Take the focus off of yourself and really look for the opportunities God give us all to share the love of Christ with those we come into contact everyday. Listen, observe, and see with the eyes of God. Look up the lyrics for Brandon Heath’s “Give Me Your Eyes” and begin to think of your life as the embodiment of Christ here today.
