I’ve been thinking a lot about how the first century church was in Acts 2:42f. ”They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.“ -Acts 2:42-47

When I was first dating Jen, one of the things that really drew me to her was how she recieved my gifts. You could tell she was truly grateful and it showed. Then as I witnessed her receive gifts from her family at Christmas, I noticed that it really had nothing to do with whatever the gift was, but more the thought behind the gift that she really appreciated and showed genuine outward gratitude.

Imagine yourself in an old beat up car. If you’re a guy you might think, “This has a lot of promise. Maybe I can renovate it and make it a pretty sweet ride.” If you’re a girl you might think, “Why did my parents get me a deathtrap?!?” Now in this car, you realize that the brakes are in as good of shape as the rest of the car looks. Let me qualify that for you... the brakes would work better if you had a hole in the floorboard (which it does) to stop the car with your feet Flintstone-style. You come across a gradual hill going downwards and it stretches on for five city blocks! You begin to think to yourself, “I wonder how fast I can get this thing going?” But before you take off down the hill you realize this hill dead-ends with a drop-off cliff. How far down the road do you want to go before you slow down and turn down another street?

Ladies (for the most part, but guys should read this part, too), Typically when we talk about modesty, it’s usually addressed to the females and rarely to the males. You may wonder why there is a double standard there. Stereotypically, males are very much visually orientated when it comes to sexual matters and females are more emotionally orientated. I say stereotypically, because personally I believe that there is the occasional case that would speak otherwise.

The World bombards us with messages that sex is good outside of marriage. They may even try to parade the lie that sex is somehow better outside of marriage. Notice: I called this an outright lie, crafted skillfully by the linguistic lying professional, Satan! The popular lie among young people is that you have to sleep with someone before you marry them to see if they are a good enough lover! Non-Christian counselors have even been known to advise married couples to have an affair to somehow improve the relationship (I’ve even heard of one recommending a visit to a prostitute!). Can anyone tell me how that makes any sense at all? |
